Melbourne Eastside Dermatology is a dermatologist specialist-led premium provider of Thermage treatment in Melbourne.
We are the only Melbourne-based specialist dermatologist (FACD fellow of Australasian College of Dermatologists) that provides this face, neck and eye firming technology.
Thermage® is a non-invasive treatment that stimulates collagen production and improves skin elasticity, helping to smooth, firm and contour the skin of the face, neck and body. Thermage is internationally recognised, with more than two million treatments performed worldwide, and is regarded as one of the leading non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatments. It is often described as a “non-invasive facelift with no downtime”.
Thermage® FLX is an advanced, non-invasive skin tightening and rejuvenation system that uses monopolar radiofrequency (RF) energy to heat the deeper, collagen-rich layers of the skin. This controlled heating stimulates collagen contraction and the body’s natural collagen regeneration process, resulting in firmer, smoother, and more contoured skin without surgery and extensive downtime.
At the core of the Thermage FLX system is patented AccuREP™ technology, which continuously assesses and automatically optimises RF energy delivery in real time. This means that the device measures local skin resistance and adjusts each pulse so that the energy delivered is precisely tailored to the treatment site, enhancing consistency and effectiveness across the treated area.
Thermage FLX delivers RF energy through specialised handpieces that simultaneously provide a cooling mechanism and comfort pulse/vibration features. The cooling protects the epidermis (top layer of the skin), while vibration technology improves patient comfort during treatmentt.
This combination of RF heating, real-time energy calibration and cooling ensures uniform volumetric heating of the dermal tissues, stimulating collagen remodelling deep within the skin’s structure while protecting the surface. Over time the stimulated collagen production leads to noticeable tightening, improved skin texture and enhanced contouring.
The Thermage FLX platform is widely used for facial, neck, eye and body skin tightening and is recognised globally as a leader in non-surgical radiofrequency therapy with minimal to no downtime.

What is the difference between Thermage FLX and the older Thermage CPT?
The new generation Thermage FLX has incorporated significant technological upgrades. Firstly each pulse is able to measure the “impendence” i.e. tissue resistance towards heat, delivering a more accurate dose per pulse for better result/safety. Secondly, the treatment protocol has been modified to allow for better targeting so the firming/lifting effect is performed more on treatment areas of concern. Finally, the improved cooling, vibration and multi-pass treatment protocol has managed to reduce the pain level down significantly.
What can Thermage be used for?
Thermage is a non‑invasive, radio frequency (RF) based skin tightening treatment. It heats the deeper layers of the skin, the dermis, to stimulate collagen contraction and production. This results in immediate tightening and gradual rejuvenation over several months.
Can the eyes be treated with Thermage?
Yes, Thermage can be used to tighten upper and lower eyelids, address eyelid hooding and reduce fine wrinkling. We would assess the suitability of the eye concern, as some severe eye hooding or eyebags are still better treated with surgery.
What results can I expect from Thermage treatment?
Skin tightening and firming results develop in two key phases.
Immediately after the treatment, you’ll notice a subtle but visible tightening effect in the treated areas. This instant firming is due to the radio frequency heat causing existing collagen fibers to contract.
Over the next 3 to 6 months, the deeper thermal stimulation activates fibroblast cells, which begin producing new, stronger collagen. This leads to gradual improvements in skin texture, firmness, and contouring, resulting in a natural looking lift and rejuvenation over time.
Apart from skin tightening, what other benefits are there from Thermage?
As Thermage has been used for years, there are many clinical benefits that treating clinicians have noted.
These include pores size reduction, pigmentation moderation, rosacea vascular stabilisation, and acne improvement.
There are still more established treatments that our practice can offer for the above concern, however, this may be seen as an additional benefit to Thermage treatment.
What are the possible side effects?
Most of the time you can return to normal life straight after your Thermage treatment. Side effects are uncommon, but can still occur
- Skin may appear red for a few hours following the treatment.
- You may experience slight swelling, tingling or tenderness for a few days following the treatment.
- As with any heat-based device there is a slight risk of burning the skin. This risk is reduced with the new more careful and cautious Thermage FLX protocol.
- Temporary nerve inflammation may occur which resolves within a few weeks.
How long does each treatment take?
Thermage treatments take between 45 minutes (for a 300 shot treatment for face), around 1-1 and half hours for full face/ neck or full eye treatment. A significant part of the treatment time is spent on planning, cleaning the skin thoroughly, and safety procedure (for example, protective eye shield).
Is the treatment painful?
The older generation Thermage CPT is widely known to cause significant pain. The FLX generation has improved on this significantly.
A conductive gel is applied to your skin during the treatment. As the handpiece touches your skin, you will feel vibration and slight heating. Slight pain can be experienced around the jawline region, this is temporary. We will treat and limit the pain to an average of 3-5 out of 10. It would be a rare occasion when patients cannot get through the full treatment as this is customisable.
Topical anaesthesia is not required for this treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
Unlike many cosmetic procedures requiring multiple sessions, Thermage FLX aims to deliver results after a single treatment, and the tightening effect continues to build up over a few months.
It is important to note that this produces a sustained but subtle result.
It is common to repeat the treatment every 12 months for ongoing benefit.
What is the cost of PicoWay laser treatment?
The cost of the treatment is dependant on the area being treated and the combination of cartridges required to obtain the best aesthetic outcome.
We do not publish the cost of treatment online. Please leave a query below, or ring 9878 6813 to arrange a time convenient for you to discuss with our cosmetic liaison officer.
While we are a specialist practice, the costing of our laser is in line with the expertise of our doctors / nursing staff and the technology we utilise.
