Melbourne Eastside Dermatology is Melbourne’s premium specialist dermatology practice utilising the latest Candela™ Nordlys system.
In Melbourne Eastside Dermatology, this device is used either as a stand-alone modality, or in combination with other technologies, such as PicoWay, VBeam Perfecta for a customised treatment that targets the problem specific to each individual.
Nordlys is a state-of-the-art Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) device that also incorporates the use 1064NdYAG laser technology.
IPL is a good all-rounder technology that uses a spectrum of wavelengths to target the different concern of the skin, including pigmentation, redness, telangiectasia (blood vessels), skin-ageing, dull skin, increased pores and scarring.
The difference of Nordlys IPL with other IPL systems on the market is it utilises a double-filter in the VL (wavelength 555nm to 950nm) and PR (wavelength 530nm to 750nm) applicators. In simple term, the filters limit the effect of the IPL, so it does not target the unnecessary target, such as the water in the skin. Therefore it treats better what it is designed to treat, reduces damage to skin and importantly, a lot less painful compared to other IPLs.
The system also includes a 1064nm NdYAG laser. This is excellent to treat larger diameter blood vessels, blue veins or angioma (blood vessel growth) on face, body or legs.
FraxPro laser is a “non-ablative” fractionated laser (NAFL) technology utilising 2 wavelength 1940nm and 1550nm, included in the Nordlys laser platform.
“Non-Ablative” Fractionated laser (NAFL) is a way laser delivers energy to tiny near-invisible micro-fractions into the skin. The result of this is it clears superficial skin pigmentation, stimulates collagen formation, smoothen skin and fine lines, and improves overall skin contour and acne/surgical/trauma scars. The downtime is only a a few days of redness/swelling, and 2 weeks of skin dry flaking.
The 1940nm wavelength is especially effective in treating superficial pigmentation, surface rejuvenation and wrinkling. The commonly known “Frax” treatment acts as an “eraser” of the skin imperfections. The 1550nm targets deeper dermis skin layer for stimulating collagen formation and reducing acne/traumatic scarring.
The 2 wavelengths can be performed on a single session in suitable patients to achieve a superficial and deep rejuvenation treatment.

Sun Damage and Pigmentation
This photograph shown is the classical patient that benefits the best from a combination of FraxPro and Nordlys IPL treatment. One to three treatments will give good clearance of pigmentation, redness, fine wrinkling and improves skin texture.
Redness, Blood vessels and Angioma
Nordlys Laser Utilises selected spectrum of wavelength to target blood vessels, talengiectasia. and redness. The 1064 NdYAG laser in the Nordlys platform also treats the bigger blood vessels and angioma extremely well.
Acne Scarring
The FraxPro 1550nm combined with the 1940nm wavelengths can target superficial and deep scarring from acne, surgery or trauma. It provides one extra option or complement other modalities of scarring treatment offered in MEDerm.
Skin ageing, wrinkling and texture improvement
Both the IPL treatment and the non-ablative fractionated laser (FraxPro) are used to reduce fine wrinkling and improve skin quality. The “Light and Bright” treatment protocol is a great way to reverse skin ageing.

What can Candela Nordlys treat?
Candela Nordlys is a multi-platform that can treat a range of problems. It is said a all-rounder treatment that can target pigmentation and facial redness caused by sun damage, large vascular lesions (angioma or blood vessels), fine wrinkling, acne and acne scarring.
It is also an excellent “entry level” multi-purpose rejuvenation treatment for anyone looking to refresh and rejuvenate the skin.
Is Nordlys right for me?
Nordlys’ IPL (intense pulsed light) system has a narrow spectrum of wavelength, thus able to customised to target the specific concern of skin.
It is suitable for all age groups from the very youthful to the more advanced-age groups of patients.
It is safe in the lighter skin type. In more tanner skin type, the clinician will discuss the suitability or the other options that our clinics offer that may be safer (such as PicoWay pigmentation laser, VBeam vascular laser, Skinpen micro-needling or Venus Viva radiofrequency)
Is Nordlys able to treat chest and arm sun damage?
Pigmentation, vascular changes, “décolletage” and sun damage on chest, back, shoulders and arms can be treated with Nordlys IPL. In fact, if a combination of sun damage is seen, this is the best form of treatment.
We would generally perform test patch before treating a large surface area.
Is Nordlys safe?
IPL (Intense pulsed light) treatments target a wide range of target, ideally used used with care under the guidance of specialists in the area.
The different between Nordlys IPL and other IPLs in the market is that Nordlys target a very specific narrow spectrum of wavelengths, which in simple terms, target the necessary concern (pigmentation, redness) without causing unnecessary damage or heat to the skin.
All IPLs carry inherent risks and our clinicians will discuss about the possibility of doing a “test patch” small area treatment to start with, in necessary cases.
We do not recommend IPLs for darker skin types (Fitzpatrick skin type 4 or above such as Indian or African skin types may be better suited for other lasers such as PicoWay or Vbeam)
Is Nordlys a laser?
The Nordlys platform, depending on the handpieces use, can be utilised for its IPL (Intense pulsed light) technology or for its laser technology (such as 1064NdYAG or FraxPro 1440nm / FraxPro 1550nm).
What is the difference between an IPL and a laser?
IPL (Intense pulsed light) utilises a variety/spectrum of wavelength , whereas laser usually targets only 1 single wavelength.
The difference is lasers can be very specific to achieve its target treatment – for example PicoWay laser works very well for pigmentation but does not reduce redness; whereas IPL will treat a spectrum of problem (pigmentation and redness) in the same session.
How does Nordlys compare with other IPL?
There are a few advantages of Nordlys IPL compared to other IPLs in the market.
Firstly it has a narrow spectrum of wavelength, so it targets the treatment concern better (such as pigmentation and redness).
Secondly it does not target the ‘water’ of the skin cell as much, so it is less painful and causes less swelling or downtime, and is safer.
Thirdly, the pulse duration (the time taken for the device to release energy) can be adjusted to the point it is sub-millisecond and therefore produces less heat and damage.
We feel that this is an excellent IPL device to complement our range of other laser devices.
What does the Nordlys 1064nm NdYAG laser treat?
This is an extremely effective laser specifically used to target larger blood vessels (telangiectasia), red vascular spots (angioma), blue veins and venous lake (blue vascular growth on face and lips).
Without this 1064nm wavelength, many vascular lesions are not able to clear well.
Some of these large lesions take only 1 treatment session to resolve completely.
Is Nordlys painful?
IPL (Intense pulsed light) systems can generally induce a snapping painful sensation, and some IPL devices are quite difficult to use because of the pain.
Nordlys is very unique that it does not target water in the skin cells, and does not cause as much heat and pain. It does not even require additional cooling for comfort or safety.
Our staff can discuss your concern about pain when you book in to consider the Nordlys treatment.
What can I expect with Nordlys treatment?
On the same day of treatment, it is expected slight swelling and redness will occur and this should subside fairly quickly over the next 1-2 days. Some pigmentation area will darken and fade over 1 to 2 weeks. Small amount of targeted crusting can occur in pigmented areas. The red vessels may disappear on the spot, or may persist and slowly fade over a few weeks.
We expect our patients to go back to normal social activity within 1-2 days of treatment, and able to apply make up and sunscreen the next day.
How many Nordlys IPL treatments will I need to reduce visible signs of sun damage?
We aim to treat to achieve a minor to moderate improvement after each treatment. It is generally between 2-5 sessions that patients will require for a very satisfactory treatment result.
Can I return to normal activities after treatment?
We expect our patients to take the day off from the IPL treatment on the same day, and depending on intensity of treatment, would be able to go back to social activities or work within 1-2 days, with make up permitted the second day of treatment.
With FraxPro fractionated laser “Frax” treatments, the first 2 days will see redness and swelling and day 5 to day 12-day15 will see surface dry skin peeling. Most patients accept this downtime and with good surface post care cream (such as silicon based gel), will find the treatments extremely acceptable.
Wearing a mask to cover the treated areas is completely fine (and acceptable socially!)
What is the cost of Nordlys IPL treatment?
It does vary between indication of each type of condition, size of area treated and difficulty of treatment.
Generally speaking, for full face rejuvenation treatment, IPL treatments are costed below laser treatments (so some patients think of this as an “entry level” treatments from price point – it certainly is not a subpar treatment! During our consultation we will certainly advise the suitability of this and the result compared to the more expensive laser therapies).
We do not publish the cost of treatment online. Please leave a query below, or ring 98786813 to arrange a time convenient for you to discuss with our cosmetic liaison officer.
As we are a specialist practice, the costing of our treatments is in line with the expertise of our doctors / nursing staff and the technology we utilise.
