Melbourne Eastside Dermatology is a recognised specialist dermatology practice in the Melbourne eastern suburbs utilising the Candela™ VBeam Perfecta system.
The Candela™ VBeam Perfecta system is one of the world’s most popular advanced pulsed-dye laser technology laser treatment. This system has been regarded over more than 15 years as the gold standard treatment for vascular (blood vessels-related) conditions including rosacea, red cheeks, facial flushing, broken capillaries, vascular birthmark (Port Wine Stain) and extremely useful for red vascular scars and stretch marks (striae).
Vbeam Technology
Explained
The VBeam Perfecta utilises pulsed-dye technology, which emits laser energy at wavelength of 595nm. There are 2 important aspects of a specific wavelength in laser treatment effects.
Firstly, the relatively deeper penetration of the 595nm wavelength ensures that the laser energy reaches the deeper part of the skin (dermis), where the target blood vessels are found. Secondly, the 595nm wavelength is preferentially targeting the haemoglobin in the blood vessels, and relatively less on melanin (pigment).
In simple terms, Vbeam Perfecta is able to target deep blood vessels in the skin while “bypassing” the top layer of the skin pigmentation. This translates into better result in reducing redness, and better safety profile especially in darker skin type.

Rosacea, Red Cheeks and Flushing.
VBeam Perfecta is the world’s most recognised and widely used Gold standard treatment for rosacea, facial redness and also reduces facial flushing.
Acne and Traumatic Scars
VBeam is helpful in reducing the acne post inflammatory erythema, red marks; and is effective in reducing traumatic scars, post surgical scars, keloid scars and acne scars.
Stretch Marks (Striae)
Striae (stretch marks) of a variety of causes, ranging from growth spurt, hormonal change, body contour change to pregnancy can be reduced with Vbeam laser in combination with other modality.
Instant Bruising Reduction
A modified light Vbeam laser setting can reduce bruising anywhere on body almost instantly , reducing the bruising changes within 24-48 hours.

What does Vbeam laser treat?
Vbeam Perfecta is a gold standard pulsed-dye laser treatment for vascular changes including rosacea, facial redness, facial capillaries (telangiectasia), facial flushing and vascular birthmark (Port Wine Stain). This is also the preferred vascular laser for treatment of acne, traumatic or keloid scars and stretch marks (striae).
Is Vbeam safe?
Vbeam utilises the specific 595nm wavelength. The unique property of this laser beam is that it has a high haemoglobin (in blood vessels) absorption, while the energy is relatively absorbed less the melanin (pigmentation on surface of the skin). Therefore this is said to be the safer laser option in darker skin type, and very specific for treatment of red vessels in rosacea skin.
As with all lasers, there are always risks but the risk of this is considered small compared to many other more invasive laser procedures.
Risks include hyperpigmentation (darker skin), hypopigmentation (lighter skin), bruising. Scarring, while not impossible, would be considered unusual when used in the right setting.
Is Vbeam safe to treat children with vascular birthmark?
Vbeam is the gold standard treatment for vascular birthmark such as Port-Wine-Stain.
Is Vbeam laser the best laser for rosacea?
Vbeam Perfecta has been recognised as gold standard vascular laser for over a decade and has been widely used by Australian dermatologists. The safety is well recognised.
Is Vbeam laser used for other conditions outside rosacea and vascular lesions?
Yes, including striae (stretch marks), traumatic scars, hypertrophic/keloid scars and red acne scars.
According to a laser consensus paper published in 2019, Vbeam is the top choice amongst international panel of specialists for traumatic scars , red acne scars, hypertrophic/keloid scars and striae (stretch mark).
Is Vbeam laser painful?
Vbeam is an extremely tolerable laser treatment. The pain is usually likened to light rubber ban flicking. During treatment, the cryogen-spray (a spray on cooling technology which is a protective mechanism to protect the skin from burning) will feel like a cold water spray.
Even with 200-300 shots of lasers doing full face treatment, it is usually performed within 10 minutes, and very bearable.
Local anaesthesia is usually not required (And not recommended as this may render the treatment less effective).
What is the difference between VBeam laser and IPL?
Most large “chain” cosmetic and laser clinics would offer IPL (intensed pulsed light) treatment. IPL is not a laser, and a lot cheaper to maintain. IPL is a broad-based lamp which has a broad range of wavelength, therefore it is less specific in its treatment target. Vbeam laser on the other hand, is a lot more specifically targeting rosacea and red skin. The easy analogy is to imagine IPL as an eraser of all colours, whereas Vbeam is an eraser of red colour. Because IPL is an eraser of all (and can induce injury in multiple targets in skin), it is more prone to complications especially in patients of darker skin type. IPL is also likely to require multiple sessions to achieve the benefit.
In terms of other types of vascular laser, many other practices do not own/utilise Vbeam because it is more expensive to run and maintain. It is our opinion that Vbeam remains the best Gold Standard laser and therefore our treatment of choice for patients, despite the running and maintenance cost for our practice.
What is the difference between VBeam Perfecta and Vbeam Prima?
Vbeam Perfecta has been the gold standard laser used for more than a decade, and continues to prove to be very effective.
Vbeam Prima is the latest laser device produced by the same company Candela. While it gives the advantage of a larger spot size (i.e. treatment can be slightly faster) and additional wavelength 1064nm to treat larger veins, many dermatologists are awaiting the result, safety and reliability of this new device.
For standard rosacea treatment, Vbeam Perfecta still remains the ‘comfort’ go-to device of a lot of experienced dermatologists.
How many Vbeam treatment sessions do I require for rosacea?
Even though improvement is noted right from the first treatment, we would advise first-time patients that they are likely going to require 2-3 sessions, 4-6 weeks apart. If you go with the following figures, you probably would not be too disappointed – 25-35% improvement 1st session, further 25-35% improvement in subsequent sessions. However it does vary between patients. Asian patients may expect less improvement as the laser parameter settings are set lower.
The improvement would usually last more than 12 months. Subsequently, treatment may be repeated 1-2 sessions (usually 1 session is sufficient) every 12-24 months.
We would recommend performing vascular in the less sunny months in autumn, winter and early/mid spring. Please avoid sun tanning or extensive sun exposure for 2 months before treatment.
What happens after Vbeam laser treatment?
After treatment, there is mild swelling and redness for usually less than 48 hours (up to 5 days). Most people would find it acceptable to go back to work 48-72 hours after treatment. Depending on the type of vessels treated, there may be a few small areas of slight bruising but the amount of bruising is usually in small areas and in majority of cases avoidable.
Some facial veins and capillaries disappear almost immediately after treatment. Improvement in the redness is likely seen within 4-6 weeks of treatment.
